  1. 21. SARS coronavirus : the role of accessory proteins and nitric oxide in the replication cycle

    Författare :Sara Åkerström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) caused the first pandemic of the 21st century. The etiological agent was identified as a novel coronavirus. Until then, human coronaviruses (HCoVs) had only been known to cause the common cold . Data indicated that the virus originated from animals. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Novel Procedures for Identification and Characterization of Viral Proteases Inhibitors

    Författare :Angelica Ehrenberg; Helena Danielson; Celia Schiffer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; drug discovery; viral proteases; inhibitors; Hepatitis C; NS3; cytomegalovirus; Biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Viral proteases are often considered to be attractive drug targets because of their crucial function in the viral replication machinery. In order to increase our knowledge of these important targets and to contribute to the discovery and development of new antiviral drugs, the proteases from hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) have been produced and their interactions with inhibitors and fragments have been characterized, using enzyme inhibition and SPR biosensor based interaction assay. 3. 23. Combination chemotherapy for human immunodeficiency virus infection

    Författare :Sarah Palmer; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The worldwide spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has spurred the search for effective drugs to combat this deadly virus. The limited effect of monotherapy treatment, in large measure due to the development of drug resistant viral strains, has led to increased emphasis on combination chemotherapy for the treatment of HIV, the focus of this study. 4. 24. Arsenic Influences Virus Replication in Experimental Coxsackievirus B3 Infection

    Författare :Ylva Molin; Nils-Gunnar Ilbäck; Eva Hjelm; Göran Friman; Jonas Blomberg; Gunnar Nordberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; coxsackievirus B3; trace elements; arsenic; selenium; virology; IFN-γ; NFκB; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Sammanfattning : Trace elements are essential for the host defence against infections, and during common infections, the balance of trace elements is changed in serum and tissues. Supplementation with selenium (Se), an essential trace element, is known to decrease the severity of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) infection in mice. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Towards ribozyme-mediated gene therapy of HIV-1 infections

    Författare :Graham Hotchkiss; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Ribozymes; HIV-1; Telomere length; HAART; Gene Therapy;

    Sammanfattning : HIV-1 is the causative agent in AIDS, the world's fourth most frequent cause of death. HIV is a retrovirus that primarily infects macrophages and T helper cells - required for a proper immune response. LÄS MER
