  1. 1. Bioinformatics, evolution and revolution in our understanding of toxin-antitoxin systems

    Författare :Chayan Kumar Saha; Gemma C. Atkinson; Victoria Shingler; Gipsi Lima Mendez; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bioinformatics; Alarmones; Evolution; Gene neighbourhood; Toxin; Antitoxin; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Bacteria experience a wide range of natural challenges during their life cycles, to which they must respond and adapt to live. Under stressed conditions such as amino acid starvation, bacteria slow down their growth mechanism by producing small alarmone nucleotides guanosine pentaphosphate (pppGpp) and tetraphosphate (ppGpp), collectively referred to as (p)ppGpp. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Novel RelA-SpoT Homolog toxin-antitoxin systems that inhibit bacterial growth through production of toxic alarmone ppApp

    Författare :Steffi Jimmy; Vasili Hauryliuk; Vicky Shingler; Michael T. Laub; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; p ppGpp; ppApp; toxin; antitoxin; alarmone; antibacterials; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : The stress alarmone nucleotides guanosine pentaphosphate (pppGpp) and tetraphosphate (ppGpp), collectively known as (p)ppGpp, are the molecular mediators of the bacterial stringent response — a bacterial stress response implicated in virulence, antibiotic tolerance and biofilm formation. At high concentrations, (p)ppGpp halts bacterial growth, inhibits protein synthesis and rewires transcription and metabolism. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Antimicrobial potential of Geobacillus sp. ZGt-1 isolated from Zara hot spring in Jordan : Piecing the puzzle of the antagonistic activity of a novel bacterial strain

    Författare :Rawana Alkhalili; Bioteknik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Thermophiles; Geobacillus; antimicrobial potential; antimicrobial peptides; bacteriocins; lanthipeptides; toxin-antitoxin; genome sequence;

    Sammanfattning : The problem of antibiotic resistance is rising continuously, creating a warning signal that calls for finding alternatives. Not only that, but there is also a rising demand for natural food preservatives. The pharmaceutical and food industry sectors are working on fulfilling these needs. This thesis is exploring possible solutions to these issues. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Small RNAs, Big Consequences : Post-transcriptional Regulation and Adaptive Immunity in Bacteria

    Författare :Mirthe Hoekzema; Gerhart E. H. Wagner; Magnus Lundgren; Kai Papenfort; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; small RNA; sRNA; non-coding RNA; Hfq; gene regulation; post-transcriptional regulation; biofilm; OmrA; OmrB; toxin-antitoxin; TisB; IstR-1; Persisters; CRISPR-Cas; CRISPR-Cas adaptation reporter; Escherichia coli; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : It is nowadays widely accepted that non-coding RNAs play important roles in post-transcriptional regulation of genes in all kingdoms of life. In bacteria, the largest group of RNA regulators are the small RNAs (sRNAs). LÄS MER

  5. 5. Small RNA-mediated Regulation of Gene Expression in Escherichia coli

    Författare :Cecilia Unoson; E. Gerhart. H Wagner; Renée Schroeder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Small RNA; non-coding RNA; antisense; translational control; ribosome standby; toxin-antitoxin; IstR; TisB; tisAB; MicF; Lrp; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : Non-coding RNAs are highly abundant regulators of gene expression in all kingdoms of life that often play important roles in vital cellular functions. In bacteria, small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) usually act post-transcriptionally by regulating mRNAs through base pairing within ribosome binding sites (RBS), thereby inhibiting translation initiation.
