6. Vascular actions of antimicrobial peptides
Sammanfattning : The present thesis focuses on the vascular effects of antimicrobial peptides especially mechanisms involving the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO), which is released from the blood vessel wall during inflammatory conditions such as sepsis. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide stimulates the expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which increases the NO production in vascular tissues or cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). LÄS MER
7. Development of antimicrobial peptides : Methodological aspects, design, synthesis and evaluation of a new class of antimicrobial peptides
Sammanfattning : A new protective group for the indole nitrogen of the amino acid tryptophan, the Boc-sarcosinoyl-sarcosinolyl (Boc-Sar-Sar) is described. This protective group shows good stability to the reaction conditions used in solid phase peptide synthesis and can be incorporated into the peptide as Fmoc-Trp(Boc-Sar-Sar)-OH. LÄS MER
8. ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF HISTIDINE-RICH GLYCOPROTEIN AND CATIONIC PEPTIDES
Sammanfattning : In an environment full of potential pathogens it is of importance for organisms to mount a fast and effective defence. Antimicrobial peptides are ancient and integral effector molecules of the innate immune system. They are found in all kinds of species from bacteria to plants and animals, indicating their importance during evolution. LÄS MER
9. LL-37-derived cyclic antimicrobial drug leads : Design, synthesis, activity and different ways of creating them
Sammanfattning : In an era where last-line antibiotics are failing, one of the powerful approaches to develop novel therapeutic agents is to turn back to nature in order to identify possible drug candidates. Among the potential candidates, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have garnered much attention as an antimicrobial. LÄS MER
10. Amphiphilic Peptide Interactions with Complex Biological Membranes : Effect of peptide properties on antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects
Sammanfattning : With increasing problem of resistance development in bacteria against conventional antibiotics, as well as problems associated with diseases either triggered or enhanced by infection, there is an urgent need to identify new types of effective therapeutics for the treatment of infectious diseases and its consequences. Antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory peptides have attracted considerable interest as potential new antibiotics in this context. LÄS MER
