1. Towards novel antibacterials : Synthesis and identification of natural product inspired inhibitors of Chlamydia trachomatis and development of chemical probes targeting virulence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Sammanfattning : Antibiotic resistance has evolved significantly to become one of the serious threats to public health today. Yet, the pipeline of new antibiotics is drying up and is lagging behind the challenging needs. LÄS MER
2. Novel RelA-SpoT Homolog toxin-antitoxin systems that inhibit bacterial growth through production of toxic alarmone ppApp
Sammanfattning : The stress alarmone nucleotides guanosine pentaphosphate (pppGpp) and tetraphosphate (ppGpp), collectively known as (p)ppGpp, are the molecular mediators of the bacterial stringent response — a bacterial stress response implicated in virulence, antibiotic tolerance and biofilm formation. At high concentrations, (p)ppGpp halts bacterial growth, inhibits protein synthesis and rewires transcription and metabolism. LÄS MER
3. Phage–derived Endolysins as Potential Antibacterials : A Study of Peptidoglycan Hydrolase and Mycolylarabinogalactan Esterase Enzymes
Sammanfattning : Bacteriophages, or phages, are viruses that infect bacteria, at the end of their life cycle produce a set of enzymes called endolysins to lyse host cells from within, facilitating the release of the viral progeny. Due to their lytic activity, endolysins have gained great interest as potential antibacterials targeting both Gram–positive and –negative bacteria, especially in the actual context of increasing rates of antibiotics resistance. 4. Microbiological Surveillance in Primary Health Care : New Aspects of Antimicrobial Resistance and Molecular Epidemiology in an Ageing Population
Sammanfattning : BackgroundThe inexorable rise in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) interferes with the goals of health care services around the world, given how critical the antibacterials are in making infections treatable and surgical procedures doable. Nursing homes residents have been identified as a reservoir for AMR, possibly due to the combination of being physically and mentally frail, frequently treated with antibacterials, and frequently moved between nursing home and hospital. 5. Studies on the molecular mechanisms of resistance to fluoroquinolones and carbapenems in selected bacterial species
Sammanfattning : The emergence of mutant bacteria with multi-resistant phenotype, no longer responsive to any of the available therapeutic agents is a growing concern. We have investigated the resistance mechanisms to two classes of antibacterials with broad spectrum of activity, carbapenems and fluoroquinolones. LÄS MER
