1. On causes and regulation of anti-viral defence in asthma and COPD
Sammanfattning : Rhinovirus infection is a main trigger of asthma and COPD exacerbations. dsRNA, a viral replication intermediate, is sensed by pattern recognition receptors in the airway epithelium leading to down-stream induction of anti-viral interferons. LÄS MER
2. Studies of specific immunity against viral infections in patients after stem cell transplantation
Sammanfattning : Recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) experience a prolonged period of immune deficiency, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality from the infections. Viruses such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) and influenza virus are frequent causes of infectious complications following allo-HSCT. LÄS MER
3. Hepatitis C in chronic kidney disease and kidney transplantation : with special reference to epidemiology and treatment
Sammanfattning : Hepatitis C (HCV) is a clinical problem in infected kidney transplant patients but is also a cause of renal disease and vasculitis. Standard therapy for HCV is a combination of interferon and ribavirin. LÄS MER
4. Interaction Characteristics of Viral Protease Targets and Inhibitors : Perspectives for drug discovery and development of model systems
Sammanfattning : Viral proteases are important targets for anti-viral drugs. Discovery of protease inhibitors as anti-viral drugs is aided by an understanding of the interactions between viral protease and inhibitors. This thesis addresses the characterization of protease-inhibitor interactions for application to drug discovery and model system development. LÄS MER
5. The clinical perspective on malignancies in renal transplanted patients
Sammanfattning : Post-transplant malignancies cause significant morbidity and mortality. In this thesis we investigated malignancies in renal transplanted patients from a clinical viewpoint. The use of regional tumour registries considerably improved identification of pre- and post-transplant malignancies, which are generally underreported in transplant registries. LÄS MER
