  1. 1. Defence on Demand : A physiological perspective on phenotypic plasticity in anti-predator traits

    Författare :Jerker Vinterstare; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phenotypic plasticity; inducible defences; stress physiology; cortisol; immune function; trade-offs; sexual dimorphism; crucian carp; visual ecology; predator-prey interactions; POMC pro-opiomelanocortin ; colour change; eco-immunology; Anti-predator defences; Inducible morphological defence; Phenotypic plasticity; Stress physiology; Cortisol; Immune function; Crucian carp; Predator-prey interactions; Trade-offs; Sexual dimorphism; POMC; Pro-opiomelanocortin; Visual ecology; Eye evolution; Melanin; Eco-immunology; Pace-of-life; Behavioural plasticity;

    Sammanfattning : Almost all species face some degree of predation risk, and, hence, evolution has produced a plethora of anti-predator defences. However, anti-predator strategies require resources, and the prevailing risk of becoming prey is influenced by many factors and rarely constant across time and space. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Causes and consequences of individual variation in anti-predator traits

    Författare :Kaj Hulthén; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal migration; partial migration; individual differences; predator; personality trait; phenotypic plasticity; inducible defence; mortality risk;

    Sammanfattning : Predation imposes a potent evolutionary force on prey, moulding the evolution of traits and diversification of species, and can furthermore have powerful ecological consequences. We know that different species vary in how they cope with their natural enemies, and, consequently, a huge range of anti-predator defences are displayed in nature. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Local adaptive pigmentation in Asellus aquaticus -effects of UV-radiation and predation regime

    Författare :Jonas Johansson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Marinbiologi; limnology; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; Ekologi; Ecology; damselfly; perch; UV-avoidance; isopod; anti-predator traits; evolution; selective predation; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Pigmentation in the freshwater isopod Asellus aquaticus differed between two habitats. Asellus were lighter pigmented in stands of submerged stonewort vegetation, than in nearby reed stands. Moreover, Asellus pigmentation became lighter with time in recently established stonewort stands. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Individual variation in behaviour: personality and performance of brown trout in the wild

    Författare :Bart Adriaenssens; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :behavioural syndromes; personality; life-history; boldness; hatchery; survival; growth; foraging; anti-predator behaviour; learning; brown trout;

    Sammanfattning : Individuals from the same population often show very different behaviour. These differences, when consistent across time, are referred to as animal personality or behavioural syndromes. Explaining the occurrence of animal personality from an evolutionary perspective has however proven a difficult issue to tackle. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Living in a predation matrix : Studies on fish and their prey in a Baltic Sea coastal area

    Författare :Ida Ahlbeck; Sture Hansson; Hannu Lehtonen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; diet analysis methods; Sander lucioperca; behaviour; rearing environment; diel vertical migration; Acartia spp.; Eurytemora affinis; Perca fluviatilis; stable isotopes; body condition; sedentarity; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis was written within the framework of a biomanipulation project where young-of-the-year (YOY) pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) were stocked to a Baltic Sea bay to improve water quality through a top-down trophic cascade. The aim of my doctorial studies was however focused on a broader ecological question, namely predation (the main driving force in a biomanipulation). LÄS MER
