1. Environmental records of carbonaceous fly-ash particles from fossil-fuel combustion
Sammanfattning : Fossil fuel combustion produces fly-ash particles that are released into the atmosphere and deposited in the environment. A particularly characteristic kind of fly-ash is spheroidal carbonaceous particles. They are composed of an amorphous carbon matrix in which other elements are dispersed. LÄS MER
2. Mechanisms for the Influence from Ice Nucleus Aerosols on Clouds and their Indirect Effects: Cloud Modelling
Sammanfattning : The role of multiple groups of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs) as ice nucleating particles (INPs), and of ice formation processes such as time-dependent freezing of various INPs, and various secondary ice production(SIP) mechanisms in overall ice concentration has been evaluated in a range of cloud systems by simulating them numerically with the state-of-the-art ‘Aerosol-Cloud’ (AC) model in a 3D mesoscale domain. Also, the mechanismsof aerosol indirect effects (AIEs) arising from anthropogenic INPs, and the responses to these AIEs from time-dependent INP freezing and SIP processes are investigated in the simulated clouds. 3. Source-Receptor Modeling of Air Pollution : Assessment of Source Contributions: Source Characterization and Chemometric Applications
Sammanfattning : Particles released to the atmosphere from anthropogenic sources affect the Earth’s climate as well as the health of the population. Anthropogenic sources of atmospheric particles are e.g. the combustion of biomass and fossil fuels, road, brake and tire wear and various industrial activities. LÄS MER
4. Formation, ageing and thermal properties of secondary organic aerosol
Sammanfattning : In order to properly represent and predict the effects of aerosol in climate systems, an accurate description of their formation and properties is needed. This thesis describes work done to increase the knowledge of processes and properties of atmospherically relevant secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from both biogenic and anthropogenic origin. LÄS MER
5. Environmental levels of thallium : influence of redox properties and anthropogenic sources
Sammanfattning : Thallium is a highly toxic element that humans are exposed to mainly by consumption of drinking water and vegetables grown in soil with high thallium content but also through inhalation of particles in the air. Thallium is also present in fossil fuels, alloys, and in electronic utilities. LÄS MER
