Sammanfattning : Since the earliest economic historical studies wage series have been used to sketch economic development both at the macro and the household level. This dissertation takes advantage of new data from women and men, working in both the countryside and in towns, as well as employed both by the day and on long-term contracts, in order to make an in-depth quantitative look at the relationships between different kinds of work and how they were compensated within an extended labor market. 4. Work, Sickness, Earnings, and Early Exits from the Labor Market: An empirical analysis using Swedish longitudinal data
Sammanfattning : This thesis contains a general overview, and five papers on the work, earnings, sickness, and early exits from the labor market of individuals in Sweden. Using relatively reliable data for hours worked and annual earnings, Paper 1 analyses the effects of (previous) sickness on both annual earnings and hourly wages, and find that people have lower annual earnings if they have experienced long-term sickness, and there is only a very week effect on the hourly wages. 5. Job Loss: Consequences and Labor Market Policy
Sammanfattning : Essay I: This paper takes a novel approach to estimating the effects of involuntary job loss on future earnings, wages and employment. Whereas the previous literature has relied on mass layoffs and plant closures for exogenous variation in displacement, I use the fact that who is laid off is often determined by a seniority rule, specifically the last-in-first-out (LIFO) rule.
