1. Conjugated Polymers, Amyloid Detection and Assembly of Biomolecular Nanowires
Sammanfattning : The research field of conjugated polymers has grown due to the optical and electronic properties of the material, useful in applications such as solar cells and printed electronics, but also in biosensors and for interactions with biomolecules. In this thesis conjugated polymers have been used in two related topics; to detect conformational changes in proteins and to assemble the polymers with biomolecules into nanowires. LÄS MER
2. Organic Electronics and Microphysiological Systems to Interface, Monitor, and Model Biology
Sammanfattning : Biological processes in the human body are regulated through complex and precise arrangements of cell structures and their interactions. In vivo models serve as the most accurate choice for biological studies to understand these processes. However, they are costly, time-consuming, and raise ethical issues. LÄS MER
3. Bright Lights: Innovative Micro- and Nano-Patterning for Sensing and Tissue Engineering
Sammanfattning : Light is the primary source of energy on our planet and has been a significant driver in the evolution of human society and technology. Light finds applications in two-dimensional (2D) photolithography and three-dimensional (3D) printing, where a pattern is transferred to a material of interest by ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, and in laser scribing and cutting, where high power lasers are used to pattern the surface of objects or cut through the bulk of the material of interest. 4. Recreating the microenvironment of the neurovascular unit
Sammanfattning : The neurovascular unit (NVU) comprises the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) and its surrounding astrocytes, pericytes and neurons that are embedded in the extracellular matrix (ECM). As the main function of the BBB is to protect the brain from inlet of pathogens and toxins, the specialized endothelial cells that keep the barrier tight will also hinder the passage of pharmaceuticals. 5. Cellulose-based Conducting 3D and 2D Composites for Applications in Plant Science and Responsive Systems
Sammanfattning : Polymers (Greek: poly=many, meros=part) are large molecules made up of many small parts (monomers) in a repetitive way, as a term was introduced for the first time (1833) by the Swedish chemist, Jöns Jakob Berzelius. By the combination of different monomers, the resulting polymer can exhibit various properties, such as biodegradability, photosensitivity and electrical conductivity. LÄS MER
