11. Impact of fermentation on the nutritive value of cassava root pulp and soybean pulp as a feed for growing pigs in Lao PDR
Sammanfattning : This thesis evaluated the impact of fermentation on the nutritive value of cassava root pulp (CRP) and soybean pulp (SBP) as feed for growing pigs. The evaluation was based on four studies (two fermentation and two animal studies). LÄS MER
12. Forage legumes as feed for pigs in smallholder production systems in the North of Lao PDR : production systems, forage biomass yield and protein nutrition
Sammanfattning : This thesis sought to characterise and understand existing smallholder pig production systems in the North of Lao PDR and to investigate the role of forage legumes as alternative protein sources for pigs in smallholder production systems. A survey found that there were three main pig rearing systems, free-scavenging, semi-scavenging and confinement (enclosures and pens), in the study areas. LÄS MER
13. Milk production from grass and byproducts : for improved sustainability of dairy production
Sammanfattning : Ruminants can produce meat and milk from fibrous feed and byproducts not suitable for human consumption. However, high-yielding dairy cows are generally fed high proportions of cereal grain and pulses, which can be consumed directly by humans. LÄS MER
14. Fluid balance and metabolic response in athletic horses fed forage diets
Sammanfattning : Concentrate diets are related to health problems in athletic horses and high-energy forage diets could be an alternative. Forage feeding may alter substrate and hindgut fluid availability which could be beneficial during feed deprivation and dehydration. LÄS MER
15. A flying start : Adapted hatching and post-hatch feeding in broiler chickens
Sammanfattning : Conventional hatching practices do not involve provision of feed and water to broiler chickens before placement at the rearing farm. This can pose problems, especially for early hatchlings, which remain feed-restricted for a considerable period due to biological variation in hatch time. LÄS MER
