  1. 21. Effects of Post-Glacial Range Expansions and Population Bottlenecks on Species Richness

    Författare :Anders Ödeen; Godfrey Hewitt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Peripatric speciation; bottlenecks; mating asymmetries; Kaneshiro model; Quaternary ice-ages; phylogeny; Motacilla; Motacilla flava; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis relates modern speciation theory to the effects of sudden changes in the range and size of populations. Special reference is made to the climatic oscillations during the Quaternary ice ages. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Female choice and paternal care in the fifteen-spined stickleback, Spinachia spinachia

    Författare :Sara Östlund-Nilsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; fifteen-spined stickleback; spinachia spinachia; female choice; paternal care; nest building; ornament; fanning; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In the fifteen-spined stickleback, Spinachia spinachia, males provide females with direct benefits by fanning, cleaning and guarding the offspring. Males announce their parental skills through intense body shakes during courtship. Females preferred to mate with more intensely shaking males. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Choice, competition, and interactions between episodes of sexual selection

    Författare :Charel Reuland; John Fitzpatrick; Ingo Schlupp; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; contest competition; sperm competition; mate choice; cryptic choice; sperm quality; reproductive status; social dominance; etologi; Ethology;

    Sammanfattning : Choice and competition are essential parts of evolutionary biology. In an effort to pass their genes from one generation to the next, animals may carefully choose their mating partners, and/or compete for access to mates. LÄS MER

  4. 24. Drosophila Sensory Neuroethology

    Författare :Suzan Mansourian; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Drosophila melanogaster; Vinegar Fly; olfactory system; hygrosensation; receptor; ancestral habitat;

    Sammanfattning : Animals, like humans, need to perceive their surroundings via their senses in order to make sensible behavioral decisions, reproduce successfully, and survive. Animals are equipped with audition, vision, thermosensation, hygrosensation, mechanosensation, magnetoception, gustation, and olfaction, which detects physical and chemical changes in their habitats. 5. 25. Dog behaviour : Intricate picture of genetics, epigenetics, and human-dog relations

    Författare :Ann-Sofie Sundman; Lina Roth; Per Jensen; Zsófia Virányi; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Dogs, Canis familiaris, share the lives of humans all over the world. That dogs, and the behavior of dogs, are of interest to many is therefore no surprise. In this thesis, the main aim has been to identify factors that affect dogs’ behaviours.The dog, Canis familiaris, is our first domesticated animal. LÄS MER
