21. The Role of Impaired Interatrial Conduction in Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the role of interatrial conduction defects in the genesis of lone paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) using combined approach of non-invasive signal-averaged P-wave ECG, invasive electrophysiological (EP) studies, anatomical studies and animal experiments. Non-filtered signal-averaged P-wave ECG revealed irregularities in orthogonal P-wave morphology and the presence of double-peaked configurations of P-wave spatial magnitude in patients with lone paroxysmal AF compared with healthy individuals (I), suggesting the presence of interatrial conduction delays localised in the posterior-inferior interatrial route. 22. Cell Contacts and Airway Epithelial Damage in Asthma
Sammanfattning : Airway epithelial damage is commonly found in asthma patients. Epithelial damage was investigated with special reference to contacts between epithelial cells.Eosinophils, common in allergic asthma, secrete cationic proteins, particularly major basic protein (MBP). LÄS MER
23. Studies of the Elemental Composition of Airway Surface Liquid with Relevance to Cystic Fibrosis
Sammanfattning : Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disease with symptoms mainly in the respiratory tract. The airway epithelium is covered with a thin layer of fluid, the airway surface liquid (ASL). The volume and composition of ASL are important in the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis. The composition of ASL was determined. LÄS MER
24. The lichen genus Candelariella in western North America
Sammanfattning : The lichen genus Candelariella comprises crustose to small squamulose members of the family Candelariaceae. The genus currently includes c. 50 species world-wide but few studies have treated the taxonomy within this group. In the present thesis the taxonomy of the genus in western North America is treated. 25. Re-evaluation of exercise-induced muscle soreness : an immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study
Sammanfattning : Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a familiar experience for the elite and novice athletes. Symptoms can range from muscle tenderness to severe deliberating pain. It is generally believed that eccentric contractions produce higher tension on muscle fibres and connective tissues than concentric and isometric contractions. LÄS MER
