  1. 11. On the Nature of β-Amyloid at Synapses

    Författare :Isak Martinsson; Experimentell demensforskning; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease; synapses; APP knockout; beta-Amyloid;

    Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease is an aging related disorder of the mind, accountable for 60-80 percent of all cases of dementia. With its insidious progression and the decline of cognitive abilities, this disease is a major challenge for our society as a whole. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Spectroscopic studies of dynorphin neuropeptides and the amyloid beta-peptide : The consequences of biomembrane interactions

    Författare :Loïc Hugonin; Astrid Gräslund; Bernard Lebleu; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biophysics; Biofysik; Biophysics; biofysik;

    Sammanfattning : Dynorphin A, dynorphin B and big dynorphin are endogenous opioid neuropeptides. They play an important role in a wide variety of physiological functions such as regulation of pain processing and memory acquisition. Such actions are generally mediated through the κ-receptors. 3. 13. Multimodal Chemical Imaging of Amyloid Plaque Pathology in Alzheimer’s Disease

    Författare :Wojciech Michno; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer’s disease; beta-amyloid; electron microscopy; imaging mass spectrometry; lipids; luminescent conjugated oligothiophenes; matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry MALDI-MS ; molecular imaging; nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry NanoSIMS ; neurodegeneration; peptides;

    Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. AD has been linked to the aggregation of amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides into extracellular deposits, Aβ plaques. These are also found in cognitively unimpaired amyloid-positive (CU-AP) individuals, but these Aβ plaques are primarily diffuse in structure. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Studies of neuropeptides in pancreatic beta cell function with special emphasis on islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP)

    Författare :Ella Karlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; alpha cell; amylin; beta cell; chromogranin; growth; IAPP; insulin; islet amyloid polypeptide; leptin; NOD mice; pancreastatin; pancreatic islet; proliferation; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Sammanfattning : The presence of protein amyloid in pancreas and its association to diabetes was first described 100 years ago in 1901, but was not identified as Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP) until 1986. The aim of the present work was to determine the role of the beta cell hormone, IAPP, in normal pancreatic islet physiology and during early disturbances of islet function. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Biological membrane interfaces involved in diseases : a biophysical study

    Författare :Fredrick Lindström; Gerhard Gröbner; Dick Sandström; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solid-state NMR; DSC; Amyloid-beta peptide; Nociceptin; DMPC; DMPG; DDAB; peptide-lipid interaction; branched-chain fatty acid.; Biophysical chemistry; Biofysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Interactions between peptides and biological lipid membranes play a crucial role in many cellular processes such as in the mechanism behind Alzheimer’s disease where amyloid-beta peptide (Abeta)is thought to be a key component. The initial step of binding between a surface active peptide and its target membrane or membrane receptor can involve a non specific electrostatic association where positively charged amino acid residues and a negatively charged membrane surface interact.
