1. Cytotoxic Cyclotides : Structure, Activity, and Mode of Action
Sammanfattning : Cyclotides are small cyclic plant proteins, and this thesis addresses their cytotoxic structure-activity properties and their mode of action on human cancer cell lines. Cyclotides were isolated from Viola odorata and Viola tricolor; three novel cyclotide sequences and two known sequences, but of new origin, were identified using mass spectrometry, amino acid analysis, and Edman degradation. 2. STRUCTURAL, FUNCTIONAL AND EVOLUTIONARY STUDIES OF ANTIMICROBIAL PEPTIDES
Sammanfattning : Antimicrobial peptides represent a heterogeneous group that displays multiple modes of action such as bacteriostatic, microbicidal and cytolytic properties that are sequence and concentration dependent. Life threatening infectious disease is now a worldwide crisis and treating them effectively is becoming difficult day by day, due to the emergence of antibiotic resistant strains at alarming rates. 3. A computational approach to curvature sensing in lipid bilayers
Sammanfattning : Local curvature is a key driving force for spatial organization of cellular membranes, via a phenomenon known as membrane curvature sensing, where the binding energy of membrane associated macromolecules depends on the local membrane shape. However, the microscopic mechanisms of curvature sensing are not well understood. LÄS MER
4. Cell-penetrating peptides targeting glioblastomas for nucleic acid delivery in the blood-brain barrier model
Sammanfattning : Glioblastoma multiforme is the most aggressive form of malignant brain tumor with poor prognosis. The efficacy of brain cancer treatment by chemotherapeutics is limited by the blood-brain barrier (BBB) which allows less than 2% of the small molecules and blocks almost all the macromolecules to transport into the brain. 5. Structural aspects of binding and transport proteins : By Barnali Neel Chaudhuri
Sammanfattning : Binding and transport proteins are essential for the transport of nutrients, vitamins, hormones, pheromones, etc. to their target destinations. Lipid-binding proteins typically contain an internal cavity where the hydrophobic/amphipathic ligands bind. Transport proteins with binding clefts for water-soluble sugars have different architectures. LÄS MER
