1. Drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Estonia
Sammanfattning : Tuberculosis (TB) infection and disease patterns among different populations are extremely heterogeneous. This thesis explores mainly by microbiological methods the epidemiology of TB in Estonia. Through the work high rates of drug resistance were found. LÄS MER
2. Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of aminoglycosides
Sammanfattning : The pharmacokinetics of amikacin in humans and the pharmacodynamic effects, i.e. initial killing and postantibiotic effect (P AE), of the aminoglycosides were studied in this thesis. LÄS MER
3. Pharmacodynamic effects of antibiotics on growing and nongrowing bacteria
Sammanfattning : The main objective of this thesis was to study antibiotic effects on nongrowing baCteria and to study the development of resistance in Staphylococcus epidermidis, a bacterium which is often found in biofilm infections. The antibiotic effect on biofilm infections is generally weak, which probably is due to decreased growth rate of the bacteria. LÄS MER
4. Pharmacodynamic effects of antibiotics : studies on bacterial morphology, initial killing, postantibiotic effect and effecitive regrowth time
Sammanfattning : Pharmacodynamics of antibiotics deals with time course of drug activity and mechanisms of action of drugs on bacteria. In this thesis pharmacodynamic parameters have been studied after brief exposure of gram-positive bacteria to daptomycin, imipenem or vancomycin and after short exposure of gram-negative bacteria to amikacin, ampicillin, aztreonam, cefepime, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefuroxime, imipenem, mecillinal,11, or piperacillin. 5. Molecular characterisation of antibiotic resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Sammanfattning : To counteract the emergence of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) a number of approaches have been proposed, amongst which are the sound usage of the present anti-TB drugs and the development of prompt and specific tools for the diagnosis of resistance. To examine the role of drugs in the treatment of resistant TB, we investigated the general crossresistance between kanamycin and amikacin, which has been reported in numerous studies. LÄS MER
