11. Innate immune airway responses after exposure to ultrafine and ambient particles : in vivo and in vitro models
Sammanfattning : Inhalation of ultrafine and ambient particles in the air triggers a response in the innate immune system of the airways. This thesis explores measures to reduce exposure to organic dust, to dampen the adverse immune effects of chronic organic swine dust exposure and develop a refined in vitro bronchial mucosa model to reduce in vivo toxicity testing on humans and animals. 12. Human dendritic cells in blood and airways during respiratory viral infection
Sammanfattning : The air we inhale contains oxygen necessary for life, but also potentially harmful microorganisms, toxins and allergens. This presents an important immunological dilemma: how can our lungs quickly and selectively eliminate harmful agents without inflicting damage on the delicate tissues of the lungs? We have thus evolved a network of cells involved in immune surveillance, made up of dendritic cells (DCs), monocytes and macrophages. LÄS MER
13. Neutrophils and extracellular traps in abdominal sepsis
Sammanfattning : Abdominal sepsis is associated with changes in systemic inflammation response and coagulation homeostasis. Excessive neutrophil activation is a key regulator in both pro-inflammatory immune response and septic lung injury. Neutrophil-derived DNA may form extracellular traps in response to invading pathogens. LÄS MER
14. Epigenetics in health and disease : on smoking, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis disease states
Sammanfattning : The main aim of this thesis was to investigate the genome-wide DNA methylation in tissues associated with the immunopathogenesis of two autoimmune diseases, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS), as well as smoking-associated methylome patterns in the lung. In Study I, we investigated the methylome of two sets of monozygotic twin pairs, representing two phases of anti citrulline protein antibody (ACPA)-positive RA disease development. LÄS MER
15. The role of PDGF-A in lung development, injury and repair
Sammanfattning : The developmental processes that take place during embryogenesis depend on a great number of proteins that are important for cell-to-cell communication. Platelet-derived growth factors are known to be important for epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during development and organogenesis. LÄS MER
