  1. 1. Development and regulation of alveolar fluid clearance in the guinea pig

    Författare :Andreas Norlin; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; oxytocin-induced preterm labor; IRDS; fetal lung fluid; preterm lung development; amiloride-sensitive sodium channels; beta-adrenergic stimulation; alveolar epithelium; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Alveolar fluid clearance is driven by active absorption of Na+ across the alveolar epithelium. Development and hormonal regulation of alveolar fluid clearance over 1 hour was studied by instillation of a protein-containing, isosmolar fluid into lungs of fetal, newborn, and adult guinea pigs. 2. 2. Pulmonary Injury Following Intestinal Ischemia and Reperfusion in Rats

    Författare :Anna Börjesson; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; reperfusion injury; intestinal ischemia; pulmonary injury; endothelium; cytokines; alveolar fluid clearance; leukocytes; orthopaedics; Surgery; traumatology; ortopedi; Kirurgi; traumatologi;

    Sammanfattning : Intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) is a potentially life-threatening condition, sometimes leading to a systemic inflammatory response and the potential development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. The overall aim of the thesis was to study the effects of intestinal I/R on pulmonary function with special emphasis on removal of excess alveolar fluid, pulmonary endothelial barrier permeability, leukocyte accumulation and function, and possible therapeutic strategies to prevent the development of pulmonary injury following intestinal I/R. 3. 3. Heparin-binding protein and organ failure in critical illness

    Författare :Jonas Tydén; Joakim Johansson; Magnus Hultin; Jakob Walldén; Sören Berg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Heparin-binding protein; Critical care; Shock; Acute respiratory distress syndrome; Acute kidney injury; Ventilator induced lung injury; Renal clearance; Anaesthesiology; anestesiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Background: For patients severely ill enough to require care in an intensive care unit (ICU), both the disease itself (e.g. bacteria in the blood in sepsis or fractures after trauma) and effects of the immune system can cause circulatory, pulmonary, or renal dysfunction. Leukocytes play a dominant role in the immune system. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Alpha1-Antitrypsin: New insights into the biological role in vitro and in vivo

    Författare :Izabela Nita; Enheten för kroniska inflammatoriska och degenerativa sjukdomar; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT), an acute-phase glycoprotein produced predominantly in the liver by hepatocytes, but also by macrophages, pulmonary alveolar cells and intestinal epithelial cells, is a member of the SERPIN superfamily (SERine Protease INhibitors), and is one of the major inhibitors of neutrophil elastase in human plasma. Although AAT plays a critical role in regulating inflammation by inhibiting neutrophil serine proteases, recent studies suggest that AAT exhibits much broader anti-inflammatory activity. LÄS MER
