1. Arsenic in Alluvial Aquifers in the Meghna Basin, Southeastern Bangladesh : Hydrogeological and Geochemical Characterisation
Sammanfattning : Elevated levels of arsenic (As) in Bangladesh groundwater has emerged as a massive calamity exposing a large population to the risk of As toxicity from drinking water sources and agricultural products. Holocene alluvial aquifers in the delta- and flood-plains of the Ganges-Brahmaputra- Meghna (GBM) river systems are severely affected by high levels of As in groundwater. LÄS MER
2. Hydrogeochemistry and spatial variability of arsenic and other trace elements in the Lower Katari Basin around Lake Titicaca, Bolivian Altiplano. : Impact on drinking water quality and groundwater management
Sammanfattning : Arsenic (As) contamination in drinking water is a world-wide problem. Thenatural origin of As, its mobility and transport are of great interest in BolivianAltiplano (Lower Katari Basin: LKB and Sothern Poopó Basin: SPB) due topresence of mineral ore deposits, brines, hot springs and volcanic rocks. 3. Geomorphology and environmental dynamics in Save River delta, Mozambique : A cross-timescale perspective
Sammanfattning : Long-term perspectives on the evolution of river deltas have provided useful knowledge capable of responding to pending questions related to the ongoing climate and environmental changes. Increasing utilization pressure on delta environments has necessitated increased attention to protect the socio-economic and ecological values. LÄS MER
4. Environmental Effects of Agricultural Expansion in the Upper Amazon : A study of river basin geochemistry and hydrochemistry, and farmers' perceptions
Sammanfattning : In this thesis natural science is combined with environmental psychology in order to determine how deforestation and subsequent agricultural expansion in the Peruvian highland jungle has affected the natural environment and rural livelihoods. This region is part of one of the most biodiverse areas on Earth and is also exposed to high pressure from deforestation that threatens the ecosystems as well as the well-being of local populations. 5. Integrating fluvial processes into the global Si cycle
Sammanfattning : Silicon (Si) is ubiqutious in natural waters as dissolved silica (DSi) and is used as a nutrient by many plant and animal species. DSi ultimately derives from the weathering of silicate minerals, a process which also consumes atmospheric CO2 and couples the silicon and carbon cycles. LÄS MER
