6. Effects of ellagic acid in human neuroblastoma cells
Sammanfattning : A diet rich in polyphenols has been proposed to have beneficial health effects and to reduce risk of disease. Ellagic acid, a polyphenol common in red berries and pomegranates, has potential anti-tumorigenic effects that make it interesting to further study in different cancer cell systems. LÄS MER
7. Activity-regulated retinoic acid signaling in olfactory sensory neurons
Sammanfattning : The aim of the studies included in the thesis is to better understand the interplay between neuronal activity-dependent gene regulation and the bioactive vitamin A metabolite all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) during postnatal development, refinement and maintenance of precise neuronal connectivity using the olfactory sensory neuron (OSN) in the olfactory epithelium (OE) of genetically modified mice as a model. We show that:Inhibition of RA receptor (RAR)-mediated transcription in OSNs reduces expression of the olfactory cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) ion channel, which is required for odorant receptor (OR)-mediated stimulus transduction. 8. Characterization of proteins involved in differentiation and apoptosis of human leukemia and epithelial cancer cells
Sammanfattning : Today, cancer is understood as an epigenetic as well as a genetic disease. The main epigenetic hallmarks of the cancer cell are DNA methylation and histone modifications. The latter changes may be an optimal target for novel anticancer agents. LÄS MER
9. The Role of Stat1 in Retinoic Acid-induced Myelomonocytic Differentiation of Human Leukemia Cells
Sammanfattning : All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), a biologically active metabolite of vitamin A, is a powerful inducer of terminal differentiation and growth arrest of several myeloid cell lines in vitro. Although the efficacy of ATRA as an anti-cancer drug has been demonstrated by the successful treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), knowledge concerning the molecular mechanisms directing ATRA-induced differentiation and cell cycle arrest of myeloid cells is lacking. 10. Molecular mechanisms of AhR mediated endocrine disruption of estrogen and retinoic acid signalling pathways
Sammanfattning : Dioxins and similar compounds are toxic substances ubiquitously present in the environment. The most potent dioxin, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), is considered to be one of the most toxic compounds known to man. LÄS MER
