1. Zooplankton response to cyanotoxins
Sammanfattning : Mass development of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is common in many lakes and coastal waters worldwide as a result of an increased nutrient loading. These blooms of cyanobacteria are undesirable for several reasons; thick mats of algae and unpleasant odour reduces the recreational values, bad taste reduces the quality of drinking water and the potent toxins produced by some species of cyanobacteria endanger human health. 2. Effects of toxin-producing phytoplankton on copepods: feeding, reproduction and implications to the fate of toxins
Sammanfattning : Phytoplankton growth and loss rates are governed by several factors and in many cases, when growth control fails, algal blooms are established. Such blooms can be formed by different phytoplankton species and some of them have harmful impacts on marine ecosystems. LÄS MER
3. Biosensor-based Methods for Detection of Microcystins as Early Warning Systems
Sammanfattning : Cyanobacteria blooms are a water menace since they produce potent toxins that have been implicated in poisonings and deaths of humans and animals after consumption or contact with cyanotoxin-contaminated water. Of particular concern are cyanotoxins called microcystins, which are hepatotoxic cyclic peptides known to promote development of liver tumors in humans and animals. LÄS MER
4. Ecological implications of the production of toxic substances by fish killing phytoplankton species grown under variable N:P-ratios
Sammanfattning : The influence of different nutrient conditions on the production of toxins was studied in certain fishkilling haptophytes (e.g. Prymnesium parvum and Chrysochromulina polylepis). LÄS MER
5. Plankton communities in a changing world - responses to temperature, brownification and lake restoration
Sammanfattning : The effects of increasing temperatures, in light of climate change, have been a well-studied topic during the past decades. However, aquatic ecosystems are also faced with additional challenges such as increasing water colour, known as “brownification”. LÄS MER
