16. The relationship between inflammation and structural changes in the airways of the lower and upper respiratory tract : Studies in patients with asthma, Sjögren's syndrome, rhinitis and children with otitis media with effusion
Sammanfattning : The pathophysiology of asthma, Sjögrens syndrome (SS), rhinitis, and otitis media with effusion (OME) in children has been extensively investigated in upper and lower respiratory tract, respectively, and shown to comprise structural changes in the airways and involvement of inflammatory cells. By comparing diseases that have bronchial hyperresponsivenses or mucosal inflammation as a common denominator, it may be possible to learn more about the mechanisms underlying inflammation in the upper and lower respiratory tract. 17. Endogenous and exogenous glucocorticoid effects in a model of allergic airway inflammation
Sammanfattning : Allergic asthma and rhinitis are inflammatory diseases of the airways. Allergic asthma is characterized by eosinophilic inflammation, reversible bronchoconstriction and airway hyperresponsiveness, whereas patients with rhinitis suffer from nasal inflammation, leading to rhinorrhea and nasal congestion. 18. Sensory mechanisms in the human upper airway - Role of TRP ion channels
Sammanfattning : The nasal mucosa is richly innervated with sensory nerves having the ability to detect changes in the environment and mediate symptoms such as secretion and itch. Some TRP ion channels such as TRPV1 and TRPA1 are abundantly expressed in sensory nerves and respond to a wide variety of stimuli, including irritants, inflammatory mediators and temperatures. 19. Bronchial hyperresponsiveness of ß-adrenoceptor agonists and antagonists in guinea pig airways
Sammanfattning : Asthma is one of the most common diseases in the industrialised countries. The underlying mechanisms are complex and still not fully understood although inflammation of the airways plays an important role. LÄS MER
20. Airway allergic inflammation. A role of bone marrow and relationship to substance P
Sammanfattning : Airway inflammation, along with reversible airway narrowing and airway hyperresponsiveness, is a central pathophysiological feature of bronchial asthma. The airway inflammation in asthma is dominated by eosinophils, cells that originate in the bone marrow. LÄS MER
