11. The asthmatic airway response – effects on physiology and biomarkers
Sammanfattning : Asthma is a common airway inflammatory disease, associated with a variable degree of airway obstruction. It is a heterogeneous condition with large variations in severity and clinical presentation. Moreover, disease activity can vary from time to time. Taken together, these factors make the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of asthma challenging. LÄS MER
12. Epithelial signatures in respiratory disease
Sammanfattning : The epithelium of the human airways protects us against harm and helps maintain immune homeostasis. In respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD, the functions of the epithelium are altered and can cause or contribute to disease progression. LÄS MER
13. Approaches to Pharmacological Treatment and Gene Therapy of Cystic Fibrosis
Sammanfattning : Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common lethal genetic disease in the white population. It is due to mutations in the gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a protein that functions mainly as a cAMP-activated chloride channel. LÄS MER
14. Towards Pharmacological Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis
Sammanfattning : S-nitrosogluthatione is an endogenous substance, present at decreased levels in the lungs of CF patients and was recently found to induce mature CFTR in airway epithelial CF cell lines. We show that S-nitrosoglutathione in physiological concentrations increases the presence of ΔF508 CFTR in the cell membrane and induces cAMP dependent chloride transport in cystic fibrosis airway epithelial cells. 15. Functional Aspects of Epithelia in Cystic Fibrosis and Asthma
Sammanfattning : The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a cAMP activated chloride channel in the apical membrane of epithelial cells, is defective in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Research efforts are focused on chloride channel function in order to find a cure for the disease. LÄS MER
