  1. 1. Nutrient cycling in agroecosystems: nitrogen cycling in southern Sweden in the 1850s and two Tanzanian villages in the 1990s

    Författare :Lars-Erik Williams; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nutrient; nutrient model; nutrient cycling; nitrogen fixation; nitrogen budget; mixed system; miombo; manure; livestock; land use; historical system; food production; efficiency; crops; agroecosystem; carrying capacity; phosphorus; Scania; sustainability; Plant ecology; Växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This study presents a general model for analysing nutrient cycling in agroecosystems. The focus is on food production intensity, human carrying capacity, sustainability and efficiency. The model can be used on systems including different kinds of land uses, which makes it applicable for studies on different scales. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Strategic nitrogen management in stockless organic cropping systems : redistribution of residual biomass for improved energy and nitrogen balance

    Författare :Tora Råberg; Sweden SLU; []
    Nyckelord :AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; bioenergy; biomass management; crop rotation; ecological intensification; green manure; life cycle assessment; nitrogen cycling; organic agriculture; soil incubation; stockless cropping systems;

    Sammanfattning : Agriculture faces the challenge of producing high yields to feed a growing world population, while simultaneously addressing environmental problems such as eutrophication, emissions of greenhouse gases, loss of biodiversity and soil degradation. Organic farming can be part of the solution, as it promotes biodiversity, uses less energy for fertiliser production and often has higher inputs of organic matter to soil than conventional farming. Sammanfattning : A griculture faces the challenge of producing high yields to feed a growing world population, while simultaneously addressing environmental problems such as eutrophication, emissions of greenhouse gases, loss of biodiversity and soil degradation. Organic farming can be part of the solution, as it promotes biodiversity, uses less energy for fertiliser production and often has higher inputs of organic matter to soil than conventional farming. 4. 4. The role of scattered trees in soil water dynamics of pastures and agricultural lands in the Central American Tropics

    Författare :Laura Benegas; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Trees affect the water cycle, and thus the amount of groundwater and surface water, through their effects upon the local microclimate and edaphic properties; in particular through rainfall interception, evapotranspiration, and infiltration. Empirical data about the effects of scattered trees upon hydrological processes have been largely lacking, especially for tropical regions. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Management Practices for Dealing with Uncertainty and Change : Social-Ecological Systems in Tanzania and Madagascar

    Författare :Maria Tengö; Thomas Elmqvist; Monica Hammer; Carl Folke; Kamaljit Bawa; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; resilience; ecosystem services; local ecological knowledge; traditional ecological knowledge; ecosystem management; agroecosystems; dry tropical forest; social institutions; forest regeneration; sacred forests; taboos; community conservation; Southern Madagascar; Androy; Iraqw; management practices; habitat loss; small reserves; human-dominated ecosystems; social-ecological systems; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The development of human societies rests on functioning ecosystems. This thesis builds on integrated theories of linked social-ecological systems and complex adaptive systems to increase the understanding of how to strengthen the capacity of ecosystems to generate services that sustain human well-being.
