13. Cotton and Cabaret : Domestic Economy and Female Agency in Burkina Faso
Sammanfattning : This study investigates the functioning of the domestic economy of smallholder cotton farmers with the overall aim of interrogating female agency, based on ethnographic fieldwork in Burkina Faso in the mid-1990s. The thesis addresses the following interrelated research questions: How were the smallholder domestic economies organized and how did they function? What were the mechanisms for economic inequality and social stratification? To what extent did women benefit from cotton farming? What economic strategies were available to women? And finally, how could female agency be conceptualized in relation to the domestic unit under male headship? Permeating the analysis is the insight that domestic economies of many West African farming societies consist of separate but interconnected economic domains, the “common” economy of the farming unit and the “individual” economies of its male and female members. 14. Change agency in (old) industrial regions : Shaping new futures
Sammanfattning : The aim of the dissertation is to develop a better understanding of the role of local agency in the transformation of old industrial regions. Theoretically the dissertation builds on concepts which are important in the debate on regional development in old industrial regions such as path dependency, negative lock-ins, the role of institutions, and new path development, while exploring and unpacking the role of agency. 15. Nature, culture, rights : exploring space for indigenous agency in protected area discourses
Sammanfattning : There is considerable geographical overlap between areas set aside for nature conservation or protection and Indigenous peoples’ lands, and the social, economic, and political consequences of protected areas have often been extensive for Indigenous peoples. Discourses of conservation converge with discourses of Indigenous peoples, and both carry a legacy of colonial constructs and relationships. LÄS MER
