11. Biochemical studies of mitochondrial DNA maintenance and topology
Sammanfattning : Mitochondria are crucial organelles in eukaryotic cells that produce the majority of adenosine trisphosphate used by cells as an energy currency to drive metabolic processes. Due to the endosymbiotic origin of mitochondria, they have their own genetic material, a small circular double-stranded molecule (mtDNA) of 16. LÄS MER
12. Sarcoplasmic body myopathy
Sammanfattning : In 1980 a new hereditary myopathy with adult onset was described in a swedish family. The most characteristic feature of this myopathy was the sarcoplasmic inclusion bodies (SB), seen in the muscle biopsies. Distal muscle weakness seemed to be the most prominent early symptom. LÄS MER
13. Autoimmune diabetes in adults : epidemiological studies of risk factors and mortality
Sammanfattning : Although autoimmune diabetes in adults is a common form of diabetes, knowledge on risk factors and long term consequences of the disease is limited. The aims of this thesis were to investigate the influence of socioeconomic factors (education and occupation), sleep disturbances and psychological well-being on the risk of developing autoimmune diabetes in adults, to investigate whether genetic variation in the melatonin receptor 1B (MTNR1B) contributes to the association between poor sleep and type 2 diabetes which has been previously suggested, and finally to investigate the risk of mortality from all causes, cardiovascular disease and ischemic heart disease in adult-onset autoimmune diabetes, with consideration of the possible influence of metabolic risk factors, glycaemic control, lifestyle factors and socioeconomic position. 14. Autosomal Dominant Leukodystrophy with Autonomic Symptoms and Rippling Muscle Disease : Translational Studies of Two Neurogenetic Diseases
Sammanfattning : There is a large variety of diseases caused by single-gene mutations. Although most of these conditions are rare, together they impose a significant burden to the population. LÄS MER
15. Functional Recovery after Experimental Stroke in Mice- Involvement of Enriched Environment, BDNF and Cell Genesis
Sammanfattning : Stroke is caused by an obstruction of blood flow to a part of the brain, resulting in brain damage. Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the industrialized world, and the primary cause of adult-onset disability. LÄS MER
