  1. 1. The Historical Origins of the Mortality Gradient : Socioeconomic Inequalities in Adult Mortality over Two Centuries in Sweden

    Författare :Enrico Debiasi; Centrum för ekonomisk demografi; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; socioeconomic status; social class; income; adult cause-specific mortality; Sweden; long-term development;

    Sammanfattning : Mortality differentials by socioeconomic status (SES) are among the most pervasive facts of contemporary demography. However, while the mortality gradient by income, class and education is well-established for the period after 1970, evidence regarding the origins of the gradient is still scarce. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Cathepsin S as a Biomarker of Low-grade Inflammation, Insulin Resistance, and Cardiometabolic Disease Risk

    Författare :Elisabeth Jobs; Johan Ärnlöv; Erik Ingelsson; Ulf Risérus; Göran Bergström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :epidemiology; cathepsin S; inflammation; insulin resistance; diabetes; mortality; cardiovascular mortality; cancer mortality; healthy Nordic diet.; Hälsa och välfärd;

    Sammanfattning : Cathepsin S is a protease important in major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II antigen presentation and also in degrading the extracellular matrix. Studies, most of them experimental, have shown that cathepsin S is involved in different pathological conditions such as obesity, inflammation, atherosclerosis, diabetes, and cancer. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Where are the world’s disease patterns heading? : The challenges of epidemiological transition

    Författare :Ailiana Santosa; Peter Byass; Ulf Högberg; Joacim Rocklöv; Sarah Wild; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; epidemiological transition; premature mortality; non-communicable disease; risk factors; Sweden; low-and middle-income countries; INDEPTH Network; Västerbotten Intervention Programme; Public health; folkhälsa;

    Sammanfattning : INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological transition theory, first postulated by Omran in 1971, provides a useful framework for understanding cause-specific mortality changes and may contribute usefully to predictions about cause-specific mortality. However, understandings of mortality transitions and associated epidemiological changes remain poorly defined for public health practitioners due to lack of evidence from low- and middle-income countries. 4. 4. Mortality in epilepsy : epidemiological studies with emphasis on sudden unexpected death and suicide

    Författare :Lena Nilsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The general aim of this study was to create, through an increase in knowledge, the preconditions for reducing epilepsy patients' significantly increased mortality The main aim was to identify clinical characteristics of patients in a large cohort of adult patients with a diagnosis of epilepsy who had a) undergone sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), or b) committed suicide. Another aim of this study was to describe overall and cause specific mortality in this cohort. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in rural Vietnam

    Författare :Hoang Van Minh; Peter Byass; Stig Wall; Nguyen Thi Kim Chuc; Cairns Smith; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cardiovascular disease; epidemiology; risk factors; rural Vietnam; Epidemiology; Epidemiologi;

    Sammanfattning : In the context of transitional Vietnam, although cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been shown to cause a large burden of mortality and morbidity in hospitals, little is known about the magnitude of its burden, risk factor levels and its relationship with socio-demographic status in the overall population. This thesis provides a preliminary insight into population-based knowledge of the CVD epidemiology in rural Vietnam and contributes to the development of methodologies for monitoring it. LÄS MER
