1. Sexual Selection and Adaptation to Novel Environments
Sammanfattning : The work included in this thesis aims at exploring the environmental sensitivity of benefits and costs of sexual selection through a combined empirical and theoretical effort, to increase our understanding of the impact of environmental change on sexually reproducing populations. Can sexual selection promote adaptation to novel environments? Sexual selection for good genes should accelerate adaptation by granting higher reproductive success to individuals of high genetic quality. LÄS MER
2. Hopeful monsters: The role of hybrids in adaptation : The impact of hybridisation and genetic diversity on adaptation to stressful and novel environments
Sammanfattning : Adaptation to novel environments can only occur if natural selection has the raw material to act upon. But small, endangered populations are often genetically depleted, and the acquisition of beneficial de novo mutations often takes too long when population face quick and extreme environmental change. 3. Helicobacter pylori : multitalented adaptation of binding properties
Sammanfattning : Helicobacter pylori infects and persistently colonizes the stomach, which results in gastritis and in some individuals peptic ulcer disease or gastric cancer. Adherence of H. pylori to the epithelium is an important factor for development of disease. LÄS MER
4. The Art of Repeating Oneself : Migratory self-adaptation: media transformation and authorship in Persepolis and The Patience Stone
Sammanfattning : This thesis studies the process and products of migratory self-adaptation: the practice of a migrant author recreating their own work in a new medium, and the baggage it brings with itself. Migratory self-adaptation is developed and analyzed in this research through a comparative and processual analysis of two cases of adaptation: Persepolis, a French autobiographical graphic novel written and drawn by Marjane Satrapi, the Franco- Iranian artist and writer, later turned into an animation movie co-written and codirected by Satrapi herself; and The Patience Stone, a novel written in French by Atiq Rahimi, the Franco-Afghan author, which is adapted to a homonymous film in Dari- Persian, co-written and directed by the author. 5. Influenza Neuraminidase : Novel mechanisms of influenza NA that enable adaptation and promote diversification
Sammanfattning : Influenza A viruses (IAVs) are one of the most common human respiratory pathogens and are largely responsible for the seasonal influenza epidemics that cause mild to severe disease. The two IAV glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA or H) and neuraminidase (NA or N), serve as the major surface antigens and also are the main determinants of infectivity, pathogenicity and transmissibility.
