2. The Art of Repeating Oneself : Migratory self-adaptation: media transformation and authorship in Persepolis and The Patience Stone
Sammanfattning : This thesis studies the process and products of migratory self-adaptation: the practice of a migrant author recreating their own work in a new medium, and the baggage it brings with itself. Migratory self-adaptation is developed and analyzed in this research through a comparative and processual analysis of two cases of adaptation: Persepolis, a French autobiographical graphic novel written and drawn by Marjane Satrapi, the Franco- Iranian artist and writer, later turned into an animation movie co-written and codirected by Satrapi herself; and The Patience Stone, a novel written in French by Atiq Rahimi, the Franco-Afghan author, which is adapted to a homonymous film in Dari- Persian, co-written and directed by the author. 3. Defining moments : a cultural biography of Jane Eyre
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the ways in which various practices, such as novel-writing, publishing, book-reviewing, reading for pleasure, adaptation and studying English literature, have produced Jane Eyre’s complex cultural profile. The organizing principle of the study is Paul du Gay, Stuart Hall et al’s ‘circuit of culture’, which identifies five key processes or ‘moments’ as being productive of the meanings that a cultural artefact or text comes to possess. 4. A World of Myths : World Literature and Storytelling in Canongate's Myths series
Sammanfattning : This thesis discusses contemporary publishing within the global, literary system through the prism of the transnational publishing project the Myths series, initiated by Scottish publishing house Canongate Books in 2005. By combining the perspectives of world literature studies and sociology of literature, I explore the conception, development and communication around the Myths series (today published in forty countries) in relation firstly to the contemporary changes in the publishing industry, situated within a more general literary debate on globalisation and cultural diversity and secondly the rise of a social order epitomised under the umbrella term “new economy”, in which the practice of strategic communication or marketing storytelling has become increasingly common.
