21. Optical methods for tympanic membrane colour and shape assessment
Sammanfattning : Otitis media is one of the most common diseases of childhood. Increasing antibiotic resistance has lead to awareness of the importance of the diagnostic accuracy in otitis media. The recommended treatment of acute otitis media (AOM) involves antibiotics whereas in otitis media with effusion (OME) it does not. LÄS MER
22. Studies on experimental anaerobic infections of the middle ear and on the polymorphonuclear leukocyte function under anaerobic conditions
Sammanfattning : Despite the clinical importance of anaerobic bacteria in otitis media and the uncertainty regarding the proper treatment of the anaerobic focal infection, few experimental studies focused upon the role of these microorganisms in otitis media have been published. In the present investigation a guinea-pig model for the induction of anaerobic monoinfections in the middle ear was described. LÄS MER
23. Metachromatic cells and eosinophils in atopic children : A prospective study
Sammanfattning : Metachromatic cells and eosinophil leukocytes were studied prospectively in 64 newborns with and without a family history of atopic disease (FH). Cellfindings in nasal mucosa and peripheral blood were related to development of atopic symptoms up to 18 months of age. For this purpose, a gentle scraping method suitable for infants was developed. 24. Structural studies of lipopolysaccharides expressed by non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae strains
Sammanfattning : The present thesis describes lipopolysaccharide (LPS) structures expressed by non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae strains. LPS is a major surface component of Gram-negative bacteria. LÄS MER
25. Nasopharynx and mucosa associated lymphatic tissue : studies on mucosal immunity, nasopharyngeal colonization with non-encapsulated non-typable Haemophilus influenzae and local administration of immunoglobulin in the upper respiratory tract
Sammanfattning : Nasopharyngeal colonization with non-encapsulated Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI) frequently occurs in infants and in adults with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), but is rarely found among healthy adults. In children with recurrent episodes of acute otitis media (RAOM), NTHI is more common than in healthy individuals. LÄS MER
