11. Investigations of temporal changes in climate and the geomagnetic field via high-resolution radiocarbon dating
Sammanfattning : Geological archives have shown periods of abrupt climate change in the relatively stable Holocene epoch (last ca. 11 700 years). One of these periods was around 2800 cal BP. Several records, mainly from Europe, reveal a shift towards wetter, cooler and windier conditions. LÄS MER
12. The complex world of proteins: Structure, function, and oligomerization of frataxin
Sammanfattning : Patients suffering from the deadly progressive neurodegenerative disease Friedreich's ataxia have reduced levels of expression of the protein frataxin. Yeast frataxin has been extensively studied in vitro, and has been shown to deliver iron to heme and iron-sulfur cluster biosynthesis, as well as to oligomerize in the presence of iron. LÄS MER
13. Engineering of lignin in wood towards functional materials
Sammanfattning : Through 270 million years of evolution, the finely tuned hierarchical structure of wood has been optimized for efficient nutrient transport and exceptional mechanical stability. Its distinctive orthotropic constitution can provide inspiration and design opportunities for the development of novel functional materials. LÄS MER
14. Interfacial Properties of Film Forming Proteins and their Layer-by-Layer Assembly with Nanoparticles
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis work was to investigate the interfacial properties of film forming proteins, stability of the layers created by them, and their interactions with nanoparticles. Mussel adhesive protein (Mefp-1) and hydrophobins (HFBI and HFBII) were the three main proteins used. LÄS MER
15. The type-I acyl-CoA thioesterase/acyltransferase gene family : linking structure to function
Sammanfattning : Acyl-CoA thioesterases hydrolyse acyl-CoAs to non-esterified fatty acids and coenzyme A (CoASH), thereby regulating intracellular levels of these compounds. We have recently identified and initiated characterisation of a novel, unique gene family of acyl-CoA thioesterases/acyltransferases, called the Type-I acyl-CoA thioesterase/acyltransferase gene family.
