6. Lysophosphatidic acid : Physiological effects and structure-activity relationships
Sammanfattning : Lipids havepreviously been considered primarily as building blocks of the cell membrane, but are now also recognized as important cell signaling molecules. Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a glycerophospholipid consisting of a phosphate head group, a linker region, and a lipophilic tail. LÄS MER
7. Nuclease Activity as a Biomarker in Cancer Detection
Sammanfattning : Nucleases are a group of enzymes that cleave the phosphodiester bonds in nucleic acids. As such, nucleases act as biological scissors that exhibit a plethora of fundamental roles, in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, dependent or non-dependent on their catalytic capability. LÄS MER
8. Towards molecular weight-dependent uses of kraft lignin
Sammanfattning : There is growing demand for a more efficient use of polymers that originate from renewable feedstocks due to the depleting supply of fossil fuels, based on economic and environmental reasons. As a result, lignin has attracted renewed interest as a resource for various bioproducts. LÄS MER
9. Activity-regulated retinoic acid signaling in olfactory sensory neurons
Sammanfattning : The aim of the studies included in the thesis is to better understand the interplay between neuronal activity-dependent gene regulation and the bioactive vitamin A metabolite all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) during postnatal development, refinement and maintenance of precise neuronal connectivity using the olfactory sensory neuron (OSN) in the olfactory epithelium (OE) of genetically modified mice as a model. We show that:Inhibition of RA receptor (RAR)-mediated transcription in OSNs reduces expression of the olfactory cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) ion channel, which is required for odorant receptor (OR)-mediated stimulus transduction. 10. Predator effects on behaviour and life-history of prey
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I investigate predator-induced effects on behavioural and life-history characteristics of prey. At any moment a given predator is capable of attacking a small number of prey. LÄS MER
