16. Snow particle size investigations using digital image analysis - implications for ground observations and remote sensing of snow
Sammanfattning : During the past century climate warming has caused rapid changes in the Cryosphere. This has increased the need to accurately monitor rates of change in snow and ice in remote or sparsely populated areas where environmental observing capacity is limited. Monitoring snow cover requires understanding of the snow pack and the snow surface attributes. LÄS MER
17. Mechanisms of adhesive mixing for drug particle inhalation (Numerical investigation of the interplay between formulation variables)
Sammanfattning : Formulation of therapeutic dry powders for lung drug delivery via inhalation is done via adhesive mixing. In this process, micron-sized active pharmaceutical ingredient particles are blended with relatively coarse carrier particles until stable adhesive units of carrier and drug particles are formed. 18. Estimating particle size distributions based on machine vision
Sammanfattning : This thesis contributes to the field of machine vision and the theory of the sampling of particulate material on conveyor belts. The objective is to address sources of error relevant to surface-analysis techniques when estimating the sieve-size distribution of particulate material using machine vision. LÄS MER
19. Single-particle cryo-electron microscopy of macromolecular assemblies
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) was used to study the structure of three macromolecular assemblies: the two hemocyanin isoforms from Rapana thomasiana, the Pyrococcus furiosus chaperonin, and the ribosome from Escherichia coli. Hemocyanins are large respiratory proteins in arthropods and molluscs. LÄS MER
20. Fine and ultrafine particle exposure: Health effects and biomarkers
Sammanfattning : Particle, especially fine and ultrafine particle exposure has been linked to lower airway infections, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), ischemic heart disease, stroke and cancer. The underlying mechanisms are under active investigation, and are still not fully understood. LÄS MER
