  1. 1. Diatoms as indicators of Holocene climate and environmental change in northern Sweden

    Författare :Christian Bigler; Ingemar Renberg; Roland Hall; N. John Anderson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical geography and sedimentology; diatoms; Holocene; paleolimnology; climate change; lake sediments; transfer functions; quantitative environmental reconstructions; northern Sweden; Abisko; Naturgeografi och sedimentologi; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Sammanfattning : The objective of the thesis was to explore the potential of diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) as indicators of Holocene climate and environmental change in northern Sweden (Abisko region, 68°21'N, 18°49'E). A modern surface-sediment calibration set including 100 lakes was developed and lake-water pH, sedimentary organic content (assessed by loss-on-ignition) and temperature were identified as most powerful environmental variables explaining the variance within the diatom assemblages. 2. 2. Waterborne Carbon in Northern Streams : Controls on dissolved carbon transport across sub-arctic Scandinavia

    Författare :Elin Jantze; Steve W. Lyon; Georgia Destouni; Helen Dahlke; Pirkko Kortelainen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dissolved carbon; DOC; DIC; TOC; sub-arctic; hydrology; Abisko; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : Waterborne carbon (C) forms an active and significant part of the global C cycle, which is important in theArctic where greater temperature increases and variability are anticipated relative to the rest of the globe withpotential implications for the C cycle. Understanding and quantification of the current processes governing themovement of C by connecting terrestrial and marine systems is necessary to better estimate future changes ofwaterborne C. 3. 3. Karaktäristiken hos strukturmarken på olika altitud i Abiskoområdet – en koppling till klimat och komplex systemteori

    Författare :Gunnar Scharin; Christer Jonasson; Johan Kling; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Abisko; patterned ground; permafrost; non-sorted circles; altitude; self-generation; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot miljöanalys; Earth Science with specialization in Environmental Analysis; Earth Science with specialization in Physical Geography; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot naturgeografi; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Sammanfattning : Subarctic and alpine areas are sensitive to climatic change when they lie at the margin of permafrost occurrence. Patterned ground in such areas is generated from an interplay among different mechanisms such as temperature, hydrology, soil texture, snow cower and vegetation. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Holocene vegetation dynamics and climate changes in the Torneträsk area, northern Sweden

    Författare :Lena Barnekow; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Paleobotanik; palynology; phylogeny; Palaeobotany; northern Sweden; Torneträsk; Abisko; lake-level; radiocarbon dating; forest history; Holocene; tree-line; climate; Vegetation; fylogeni; palynologi; Physical geography; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this study was to reconstruct the Holocene vegetation history and the climate changes in a subarctic area. The results are based on pollen and macrofossil records from six lakes in the Torneträsk area. The lakes are situated at altitudes between 370 and 999 m a.s. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Spatial and Temporal Variations of Solifluction and Related Environmental Parameters in the Abisko Mountains, Northern Sweden

    Författare :Hanna Ridefelt; Jan Boelhouwers; Antoni Lewkowicz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; solifluction; movement rates; Abisko region; Geographical Information Systems; statistical modelling; geomorphic work; permafrost; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis presents an assessment of the variation in solifluction occurrence, morphometry and movement rates in the Abisko region, northern Sweden. Variations in movement rates are analyzed both on a regional and local scale. LÄS MER
