1. Imidazole containing polymers complexed with Cu2+ and Zn2+
Sammanfattning : An enormous problem for the shipping industry is fouling of marine organisms such as algae andbarnacles on the boat hull. The negative consequences for the society are both economical as well asenvironmental. To prevent fouling in general, biocides are typically incorporated directly into the paint. LÄS MER
2. Peptide nucleic acid conjugates as artificial ribonucleases : Cu2+ and Zn2+-dependent PNAzymes
Sammanfattning : Synthetic modified oligonucleotides are gaining momentum as powerful therapeutic tools used in the treatment of life-threatening diseases. Degradation of disease-related RNA sequences is one of the goals achieved with oligonucleotide therapeutics, albeit the currently available technologies rely on the recruitment of endogenous enzymes, RNase H or RISC, limiting the chemical architecture of oligonucleotide drugs. 3. Molecular characterization of the Ro52 autoantigen and its disease related epitopes
Sammanfattning : The presence of high titers of autoantibodies in patient sera is characteristic for the autoimmune disorder Sjögren s syndrome. The major targets for these autoantibodies are three intracellular proteins Ro52, Ro60 and La. It is still unclear why these proteins become targets for the immune system, and how this autoreactivity is triggered. LÄS MER
4. Polypeptide functionalized gold nanoparticles for bioanalytical applications
Sammanfattning : Detection strategies that allow for simple, rapid, cost efficient and sensitive monitoring of proteins and their interactions with biomolecules are of great importance in drug development and diagnostics. This thesis describes the development of bioanalytical applications based on the tunable self-assembly of gold nanoparticles functionalized with a de novo designed polypeptide. LÄS MER
5. Structural studies of metal-binding proteins revealing dynamic behaviour
Sammanfattning : The Mg2+ and Mn2+ structures of calbindin D9k have been determined and they reveal a conformational change compared to the structures of apo and (Ca2+)2-calbindin D9k. These findings are unique, since normally calcium and not magnesium is known to induce conformational changes of EF-hand proteins. LÄS MER
