1. Bioreduction of Carbonyl Compounds to Chiral Alcohols by Whole Yeast Cells: Process Optimisation, Strain Design and Non-Conventional Yeast Screening
Sammanfattning : Chiral building blocks are needed for the production of drugs and fine chemicals, which requires the use of several synthetic routes to produce a specific enantiomer of interest. One promising approach to introduce chirality into molecules is the stereo-selective whole cell bioreduction of carbonyl compounds or ketones to the corresponding chiral alcohols. LÄS MER
2. Evolution of Yeast Respiro-Fermentative Lifestyle and the Underlying Mechanisms Behind Aerobic Fermentation
Sammanfattning : Under aerobic conditions, most yeasts such as Kluyveromyces lactis, prefer the respiratory pathway and some, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae prefer less energy efficient fermentative pathway for their energy metabolism. These two metabolic strategies are also known as Crabtree negative and Crabtree positive respectively, and the evolution of the latter has lately been explained by the “make-accumulate-consume” life strategy. 3. An NADH-Coupled Biosensor for Engineering Redox Metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Sammanfattning : Baker’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae’s potential in industrial biotechnology for producing valuable products e.g. biofuels, bulk chemicals, bio-flavours and pharmaceuticals is established. LÄS MER
4. Novel Synthetic Biology Tools for Metabolic Engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Sammanfattning : The most well characterized eukaryote model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae is not only preferred as a microbial cell factory for synthesis of industrial products, e.g. bioethanol, but this eukaryote host system is also defined as a robust scaffold for commercial production of diverse chemicals e.g. LÄS MER
5. Chromatin Dynamics in the Fission Yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe
Sammanfattning : In the eukaryotic cell nucleus, spatial organization and dynamics of the genome is important in the regulation of gene expression. This thesis describes the use of the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, to study chromatin regulation and dynamics. We used nitrogen starvation to induce transcription of genes in fission yeast cells. LÄS MER
