  1. 11. Mating behaviour in Drosophila melanogaster and its implication to genetic variation

    Författare :Sven-Eric Åslund; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; drosophila melanogaster; mating behaviour; fitness; allozymes; bristles; Y chromosome; polymorphism; selection;

    Sammanfattning : Not much is known about the mechanisms affecting the genetic composition of populations of different species. To investigate one of these potential mechanisms, mating behaviour, the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, was chosen as an experimental animal. LÄS MER

  2. 12. The Human Y chromosome and its role in the developing male nervous system

    Författare :Martin M. Johansson; David Skuse; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MSY; sex differences; CNV; SNP; palindrome; palindromes; gr gr duplication; gr gr deletion; b2 b3 deletion; b2 b3 duplication; blue-grey duplication; blue-grey like duplication; IR2; U3; STS; AZFa; AZFb; AZFc; Olivary nucleus; Medulla oblongata; spinal cord; white matter; Affymetrix 6.0; embryo; embryonal; haplogroup; haplogroups; R1a; R1b; R-M207; E-M96; I-M170; J-M304; G-M201; Ashkenazi; Bolivian; Chinese; SNP array; padlock probing; AMY-tree; Biologi med inriktning mot zoologisk utvecklingsbiologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Development;

    Sammanfattning : Recent research demonstrated that besides a role in sex determination and male fertility, the Y chromosome is involved in additional functions including prostate cancer, sex-specific effects on the brain and behaviour, graft-versus-host disease, nociception, aggression and autoimmune diseases. The results presented in this thesis include an analysis of sex-biased genes encoded on the X and Y chromosomes of rodents. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Evolutionary History of the Root Vole (Microtus oeconomus) as Revealed by Y Chromosome and Mitochondrial DNA sequences

    Författare :Cecilia Brunhoff; Malmö Patologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Genetics; colonization history; phylogeography; root vole; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Sammanfattning : The root vole (Microtus oeconomus) is a rodent with Holarctic distribution. In fact, it is the only Microtus vole found in both Eurasia and North America. Phylogeographic analyses of the root vole from across its distribution range were performed using mitochondrial and Y chromosome DNA sequences. LÄS MER

  4. 14. The evolution of sexual dimorphism and its genetic underpinnings

    Författare :Philipp Kaufmann; Elina Immonen; Tim Connallon; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sexual conflict; sex-specific dominance; maintenance of genetic variance; sexual antagonism; sex chromosomes; Y haplotypes; artificial selection; sexual dimorphism; Callosobruchus maculatus; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Sexual dimorphism often constitutes the largest phenotypic variance within species but it is puzzling how sexual dimorphisms evolve because most of the genome is shared between the sexes. Sexually antagonistic (SA) selection on a shared genome sets the stage for intralocus sexual conflict. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Postglacial Population History of the Common Shrew (Sorex araneus) in Fennoscandia : Molekylära studier av återkolonisation, könsbundet genflöde och kromosomrasbildning

    Författare :Anna-Carin Andersson; Håkan Tegelström; Cecilia Alström-Rapaport; Jeremy B Searle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular genetics; Sorex araneus; chromosome race; postglacial recolonisation; hybrid zone; sex-biased gene flow; chromosomal evolution; Genetik; Genetics; Genetik;

    Sammanfattning : The common shrew, Sorex araneus, has one of the most variable karyotypes among mammals, displaying numerous chromosomes races throughout its distribution, which can be categorized into different karyotypic groups. The objective of this thesis was to examine the postglacial population history of Fennoscandian common shrews using autosomal microsatellites, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and a Y chromosome specific microsatellite (L8Y).
