16. Modalities of Mind : Modality-specific and nonmodality-specific aspects of working memory for sign and speech
Sammanfattning : Language processing is underpinned by working memory and while working memory for signed languages has been shown to display some of the characteristics of working memory for speech-based languages, there are a range of anomalous effects related to the inherently visuospatial modality of signed languages. On the basis of these effects, four research questions were addressed in a series of studies:1. LÄS MER
17. Active Memory Processing on Multiple Time-scales in Simulated Cortical Networks with Hebbian Plasticity
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines declarative memory function, and its underlying neural activity and mechanisms in simulated cortical networks. The included simulation models utilize and synthesize proposed universal computational principles of the brain, such as the modularity of cortical circuit organization, attractor network theory, and Hebbian synaptic plasticity, along with selected biophysical detail from the involved brain areas to implement functional models of known cortical memory systems. 18. Working memory : development, disorders and training
Sammanfattning : Working memory (WM) is the ability to keep information online during a short period of time. Brain regions underlying WM functioning are found in the frontal and parietal cortices. It is largely unknown to what extent the neural substrates underlying WM are susceptible to training induced change. LÄS MER
19. Lost in Translation : Speech recognition and memory processes in native and non-native language perception
Sammanfattning : This thesis employed an integrated approach and investigated intra- and inter-individual differences relevant for normally hearing (NH) and hearing-impaired (HI) adults in native (Swedish) and non-native (English) languages in adverse listening conditions. The integrated approach encompassed the role of cognition as a focal point of interest as well as perceptualauditory and linguistic factors. LÄS MER
