  1. 1. How elephants utilize a miombo-wetland ecosystem in Ugalla landscape, Western Tanzania

    Författare :Elikana Kalumanga; Sara Cousins; Steve Lyon; Jan Bengtsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biodiversity; Browsing; Elephants; Forage; GPS collars; Mineral elements; Miombo woodlands; Protected areas; Termite mounds; Ugalla; Water hyacinth; Woody plants abundance; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : African elephants are ‘keystone’ species with respect to biodiversity conservation in Africa since they maintain habitats that support several animal communities by changing vegetation structure through foraging and by dispersing seeds between landscapes. Elephants are also ‘flagship’ species because, given their impressive size, they can make people sympathetic and stimulate local and international concerns for their protection. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Breaking the ice : effects of ice formation and winter floods on vegetation along streams

    Författare :Lovisa Lind; Christer Nilsson; Christine Weber; Michael Scott; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; anchor ice; climate change; in-stream; riparian; river ice; streams; vegetation;

    Sammanfattning : Streams in cold regions are characterized by unique hydrological processes that control flow regime and water levels. One of the most important processes is the formation, growth and melting of different types of ice in and around the stream channel during winter. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The role of vegetation dynamics in the control of atmospheric CO2 content

    Författare :Stephen Sitch; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Atmospheric CO2 content; climate change; plant functional types; terrestrial biosphere model; DGVM; vegetation dynamics; land use; land cover change; Plant ecology; Växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis contains a description of the Lund-Potsdam-Jena Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (LPJ-DGVM) and its application to infer the role of vegetation dynamics on atmospheric CO2 content at different time-scales. The model combines vegetation dynamics and biogeochemistry in a modular framework. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Cold Acclimation : Dissecting the plant low temperature signaling pathway using functional genomics

    Författare :Catherine Benedict; Vaughan Hurry; Matsuo Uemura; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cold acclimation; functional genomics; microarray; Populus tremula; Arabidopsis thaliana; gene voting; regulon; enhancer-blocking; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The physiological process of cold acclimation protects plants native to the temperate regions of the world from the deleterious effects of low and freezing temperatures. This is achieved by a series of transcriptional, regulatory, and metabolic changes that enable continued growth and survival. Within minutes of exposure to temperatures below ca. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Fire, plant-derived smoke and grazing effects on regeneration, productivity and diversity of the Sudanian savanna-woodland ecosystem

    Författare :Sidzabda Djibril Dayamba; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The establishment and subsequent dynamics and productivity of many plants is affected by diverse environmental factors, some of the most important in savanna ecosystems being herbivory, fire and its related cues. This thesis assessed the effects of these factors on the woody and herbaceous regeneration, productivity and diversity of Sudanian savanna-woodlands. LÄS MER
