16. Control and Communication with Signal-to-Noise Ratio Constraints
Sammanfattning : This thesis is about two problems in the intersection of communication and control theory. Their common feature is that they involve communication over an additive white noise channel with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) constraint. The first problem concerns the transmission of a real-valued signal from a partially observed Markov source. LÄS MER
17. Mid- and near-infrared NICE-OHMS : techniques for ultra-sensitive detection of molecules in gas phase
Sammanfattning : Noise-immune cavity-enhanced optical heterodyne molecular spectrometry (NICE-OHMS) is a technique for ultra-sensitive detection of molecular absorption and dispersion. For highest performance, the technique combines cavity enhancement (CE) with frequency modulation (FM); while the former increases the effective interaction length between the light and the analyte by several orders of magnitudes, the latter removes the in-coupling of 1/f noise and makes the signals background free. 18. Diffusion MRI with generalised gradient waveforms : methods, models, and neuroimaging applications
Sammanfattning : The incessant, random motion of water molecules within biological tissues reveals unique information about the tissues’ structural and functional characteristics. Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging is sensitive to this random motion, and since the mid-1990s it has been extensively employed for studying the human brain. LÄS MER
19. On Bit-Wise Decoders for Coded Modulation
Sammanfattning : Coded modulation is a technique that emerged as a response to the growing demand for high data rates. It was devised to achieve high spectral efficiency with high reliability, potentially approaching Shannon’s capacity. The main idea of coded modulation consists in combining error-correcting coding with higher-order modulation. LÄS MER
20. Investigations of neural attractor dynamics in human visual awareness
Sammanfattning : What we see, how we see it and what emotions may arise from stimuli has long been studied by philosophers, psychologists, medical doctors and neuroscientists. This thesis work investigates a particular view on the possible dynamics, utilizing computational models of spiking neural attractor networks. LÄS MER
