1. Land-Sea Interactions in the Coastal-Marine System of the Baltic Sea under Hydro-Climatic Variability
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates a few important component processes for understanding and quantifying eutrophication in the Baltic Sea, that include characterization of nutrient loadings from land, water flow in the sea under changing climate conditions and transport of solutes originating from different locations along the coast. Furthermore, this study aims to improve our understanding on how processes from land (the nutrient loading conditions) and the sea (transport dynamics and water quality) couple to determine the fate of nutrients in the sea and the water quality in a selected localized coastal area, the Himmerfjärden Bay. 2. Water and Heat Transport in Road Structures : Development of Mechanistic Models
Sammanfattning : The coupled transport of water and heat, involving freezing and thawing, in the road structure and its immediate environment is important to consider for optimal design and maintenance of roads and when assessing solute transport, of e.g. de-icing salt, from roads. LÄS MER
3. Generation of Leachate and the Flow Regime in Landfills
Sammanfattning : The environmental impacts of landfills are associated mainly with the emission of leachate and biogas. Sanitary landfilling aims to stabilize the landfill in a efficient and controlled way, so that the environmental impacts are minimized. When a sanitary landfill has attained its final storage quality, it can be integrated into the environment. LÄS MER
4. Conceptualization of solute transport using time domain reflectometry. A combined laboratory and field study
Sammanfattning : Solute transport in the unsaturated zone is a complex process. The first of the two objectives for this study was to examine how it could be conceptualized under different flow conditions. LÄS MER
5. Solute Transport Across Scales : Time Series Analyses of Water Quality Responses to Quantify Retention and Attenuation Mechanisms in Watersheds
Sammanfattning : The intra-continental movement of waterborne contaminants is governed by the distribution of solute load in the landscape along with the characteristics and distribution of the hydrological pathways that transport the solutes. An understanding of the processes affecting the transport and fate of the contaminants is crucial for assessments of solute concentrations and their environmental effect on downstream recipients.
