1. Effects of forest fire smoke and volcanism on the stratospheric aerosol
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores the stratospheric aerosol through both in-situ measurements and remote sensing. The background stratospheric aerosol is complex and is perturbed by injections of forest fire smoke particles and by particles formed from volcanic SO2. LÄS MER
2. Causal links of past climate change in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 climate models
Sammanfattning : The climate system is influenced by various external forcings (e.g. volcanic forcing, solar forcing and change of greenhouse gas concentrations) and its own internal climate variability. LÄS MER
3. New constraints on paleoreconstructions through geochronology of mafic dyke swarms in North Atlantic Craton
Sammanfattning : Earth history is punctuated by a series of events of supercontinent amalgamation and break-up. Fragments of old continents display rifted margins and orogenic sutures that testify their involvement in supercontinent cycles. LÄS MER
4. U-Pb baddeleyite geochronology of Precambrian mafic dyke swarms and complexes in southern Africa - regional scale extensional events and the origin of the Bushveld Complex
Sammanfattning : Dolerite dykes are formed when iron- and magnesium-rich (mafic) mantle-derived magmas ascend through the lithosphere (upper part of the mantle) and crystallize as ‘hydro-fractures’ within the crust. Dykes may exist in great numbers to form dyke swarms (linear or radiating), which can be linked to time periods of continental break-up, or attempted break-up events, associated with voluminous volcanism. 5. Terrestrial consequences of hypervelocity impact – shock metamorphism, shock barometry, and newly discovered impact structures
Sammanfattning : Impact cratering was once considered a rare geological process of no, or little, importance to the evolution of the Solar System and planet Earth. After more than 50 years of space exploration and the discovery of numerous (~190 as of October 2016) impact structures on Earth, this view has changed, and it is now clear that impact craters are in fact one of the most common morphological features on solid bodies in the Solar System.
