6. The CpG island methylator phenotype in colorectal cancer : studies on risk and prognosis
Sammanfattning : Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common malignancy in developed countries. The mortality is high, with nearly half of patients dying from the disease. The primary treatment of CRC is surgery, and decisions about additional treatment with chemotherapy are based mainly on tumor stage. LÄS MER
7. Theoretical aspects of tetrapyrrole biochemistry
Sammanfattning : Modern theoretical simulations are able to provide significant insight into biochemical problems on a scale which continues to expand. With the aid of computer power and the sophisticated programs of researchers in the field, we have addressed a series of problems related to the so-called tetrapyrrole cofactors found in all living organisms. 8. Urologic and metabolic consequences of continent urostomy (Kock reservoir) in children and adolescents
Sammanfattning : During the last decades, urinary diversion using an intestinal segment has been commonly used in children and adolescents. Kock pouch is a feasible alternative for the children in need of a continent diversion where other alternatives such as Mitrofanoff are excluded for various reasons. LÄS MER
9. Vascular mechanisms in dementia with special reference to folate and fibrinolysis
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to study the biomarker homocysteine and other novel potential vascular risk factors for dementia. In an out-patient based study of a cohort of 926 consecutive subjects referred to our Memory Unit during 1996―2000, serum-folate was lower and total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) and serum methyl malonate were higher in subjects being prescribed with B12. 10. Studies on Vitamin B12 and Folate Deficiency Markers in the Elderly : A Population-based Study
Sammanfattning : The aims of this study were to document the levels of cobalamin, folate, methylmalonic acid (MMA) and total homocysteine (tHcy) in serum and their relations to symptoms, clinical findings, and other factors in order to improve the possibilities of detecting early deficiency of vitamin B12 or folate, and to study the effects of cobalamin and folic acid treatment over a three-year period. The study population consisted of a 20% random sample of persons 70 years or older living in Älvkarleby in mid-Sweden. LÄS MER
