  1. 1. Cryptic coloration, microhabitat choice and polymorphism in Idotea baltica (Isopoda)

    Författare :Sami Merilaita; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I have studied cryptic coloration, microhabitat use and colour polymorphism in the marine isopod Idotea baltica. In the Baltic Sea it lives and feeds mainly on the seaweed Fucus vesiculosus, which in sheltered sites usually is whitespotted on its lower parts due to epizoites. The white-spotted morph of I. 2. 2. Fish foraging under visual constraints

    Författare :Mikael Jönsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; planktivore.; piscivore; brownification; visual foraging; Turbidity;

    Sammanfattning : Visual conditions are changing in several different ways. Some lakes are getting turbid due to eutrophication or erosion while others are getting browner due to brownification. These two types of visual degradation results in completely different optical properties of lakes. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Ecology of red admiral migration

    Författare :Oskar Brattström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nymphalidae; Lepidoptera; migration patterns; migration; genetic structure; AFLP; lipid content; Inachis io; stable isotopes; orientation; navigation; weather; Animal ecology; red admiral; Vanessa atalanta; Djurekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The red admiral (Vanessa atalanta) is a migratory butterfly that can be found in North America, North Africa, Europe and some parts of Asia. In Europe the main part of the population spend winter in the Mediterranean region and the following spring leave this area to breed further to the north. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Life at stake when playing hide and seek : Concealing effects of prey colouration and visual backgrounds

    Författare :Marina Dimitrova; Merilaita Sami; Innes C. Cuthill; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; predation; adaptive prey coloration; camouflage; concealment; crypsis; background matching; disruptive colouration; distractive markings; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestrisk ekologi; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : A prey animal can use different strategies to avoid becoming eaten by predators. One such widely recognised strategy is the use of body colouration to decrease the risk of becoming detected, i.e. cryptic colouration. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Odour-mediated nectar foraging in the silver Y moth, Autographa gamma

    Författare :Dainius Plepys; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; predation risk; Noctuidae; Lepidoptera; flight tunnel; GC-EAD; single sensillum; sprayer; ultrasound; floral volatiles; attraction; foraging; mate-finding; lilac aldehydes; olfactory receptor neurones; Ecology; Ekologi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Sammanfattning : It is well established that floral odours play a significant role in the nectar foraging behaviour in Lepidoptera and other insect orders. Floral odour may elicit searching, alighting and feeding behaviours alone or in concert with visual stimuli. LÄS MER
