  1. 1. Investigations of neural attractor dynamics in human visual awareness

    Författare :David N. Silverstein; Pawel Herman; Martin Ingvar; Karl Friston; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; attractor dynamics; visual awareness; visual perception; visual attention; attentional blink; backward masking; gliomas; brain tumor; white matter; cell assemblies; neocortical model; threat response; fear signaling; amygdala; Biological Physics; Biologisk fysik; Computer Science; Datalogi; Tillämpad matematik och beräkningsmatematik; Applied and Computational Mathematics;

    Sammanfattning : What we see, how we see it and what emotions may arise from stimuli has long been studied by philosophers, psychologists, medical doctors and neuroscientists. This thesis work investigates a particular view on the possible dynamics, utilizing computational models of spiking neural attractor networks. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Litteracitet och visuella texter : Studier om lärare och kortutbildade deltagare i sfi

    Författare :Qarin Franker; Monica Axelsson; Yvonne Eriksson; Christopher Stroud; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; adult basic literacy education; election posters; literacies; model reader; multimodality; reading paths; repertoire; second language; social semiotics; Swedish language programme for immigrants sfi ; visual texts; Bilingualism; Tvåspråkighet; Education in Languages and Language Development; utbildningsvetenskap med inriktning mot språk och språkutveckling;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to contribute to the growing body of knowledge concerning the adult basic literacy education in the Nordic countries and broaden research on literacy from its traditional focus on verbal texts to include images and visual texts. The thesis comprises a research survey concerning adult literacy and two empirical, exploratory studies focusing on the use of visual texts in the basic Swedish language programme for adult immigrants, Svenskundervisning för invandrare (sfi). 3. 3. Neural limits of visual resolution

    Författare :Zoran Popovic; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cell separation; cortical magnification; detection; estimated receptive field; high-pass filtered optotypes; nyquist limit; psychophysics; resolution; ganglion cells;

    Sammanfattning : Aims: The aim of this thesis was to formulate a model of retinal neural circuitry in humans based on morphological estimates of retinal cone and ganglion cell populations, to compare results based on this model to psychophysical measurements of visual resolution and identify the retinal neural factors that limit visual resolution.Materials & Methods: Total displacement of central ganglion cells from foveal cones was obtained by estimating the length of fibers of Henle in four human retinas along the nasal or vertical hemi-meridians. 4. 4. Photoreceptor degeneration, second order neuron remodeling and glia reactivity in an in vivo and in vitro model of retinal neurodegeneration

    Författare :Tanzina Mollick; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Sammanfattning : Photoreceptors have the ability to last during the entire lifespan of an individual. Being the first line of neurons in the visual transduction pathway, their health and maintenance is eminent for proper retinal function. However, photoreceptors are susceptible to neurodegenerative retinal dystrophies. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Experimental Injury to the Visual System : Molecular Studies of the Retina

    Författare :Ulrika Lönngren; Finn Hallböök; Fredrik Ghosh; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; retina; injury; ischemia; gene expression; brimonidine; alpha-2-adrenergic agonist; neuroprotection; growth factors; apoptosis; Müller cells; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Retinal ganglion cells play a crucial role in the relay of visual signals from the eye to the brain. This cell type is affected and eventually lost in the eye disease glaucoma, resulting in progressive and irreversible loss of vision. LÄS MER
