    Sammanfattning : The Middle Iron Age, around 300–650 CE, was characterised by extensive transformations across many aspects of society in the area of present-day Sweden. Within the central agricultural regions of the southern parts of the country, these changes are evident in a re-organisation of the settlements, renewed burial practices, the building of large-scale monuments, as well as increased militarisation, social stratification and an increase in imported objects. An analysis of the ways in which this resource is used together with other resources gives us a deeper insight into the relationship between writers and readers and into the written culture in which the rune-stones were produced.     Sammanfattning : The Birka Excavations 1990-95 provided a unique opportunity to excavate a Swedish Viking Age town stratigraphically, allowing the finds - including extensive and well-preserved faunal remains - to be dated accurately.
