11. Nucleotide Substitution Patterns in Vertebrate Genomes
Sammanfattning : The rates and patterns at which nucleotide substitutions occur vary significantly across the genome sequence of vertebrates. A prominent example is the difference in the rate of evolution of functional sequences versus nonfunctional (neutrally evolving) sequences, which is explained by the influence of natural selection on functional sequences. 12. Basal Vertebrate Divergences from a Molecular Perspective
Sammanfattning : Fishes (Superclass Pisces) constitute the most numerous and morphologically diverse vertebrate group, yet only a small fraction of all molecular evolutionary studies concern piscine evolution. This thesis aims to investigate the vertebrate tree, through the analysis of mitochondrial (mt) DNA sequences. LÄS MER
13. Regulation of neurogenesis in the vertebrate CNS
Sammanfattning : During development, neurons are generated from self-renewing progenitor cells in the ventricular zone of the neural tube. Proneural bHLH proteins are involved in the regulation of neurogenesis and can direct the exit of neural progenitors from the cell cycle and promote the expression of downstream differentiation markers. 14. Evolution of Vertebrate Endocrine and Neuronal Gene Families : Focus on Pituitary and Retina
Sammanfattning : The duplication of genes followed by selection is perhaps the most prominent way in which molecular biological systems gain multiplicity, diversity and functional complexity in evolution. Whole genome duplications (WGDs) therefore have the potential of generating an extraordinary amount of evolutionary innovation. LÄS MER
15. On the evolutionary origin of the vertebrate cortex
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to dissect out the minimalistic ancestral neural hardware, which has been conserved in homologue structures of the cerebral cortex and in particular the neocortex, across vertebrates. For this purpose, we utilise the lamprey - a cyclostome (jawless vertebrate), and we compare its anatomical homologue of cortex, the lateral pallium (LPal), in terms of its connectivity, cytoarchitecture and sensory organisation with that of the mammalian neocortex.
