  1. 1. Protective Mechanical Ventilation in Inflammatory and Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Models

    Författare :Jesper Sperber; Jan Sjölin; Markus Castegren; Anders Larsson; Anders Larsson; Anders Oldner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mechanical ventilation; Systemic inflammation; Pneumonia; Ventilator-associated pneumonia; Endotoxin; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;

    Sammanfattning : Severe infections, trauma or major surgery can each cause a state of systemic inflammation. These causes for systemic inflammation often coexist and complicate each other. Mechanical ventilation is commonly used during major surgical procedures and when respiratory functions are failing in the intensive care setting. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa using immunoglobulin Y : A porcine experimental model of ventilator-associated pneumonia and septic shock caused by P. aeruginosa

    Författare :Alexander Otterbeck; Miklós Lipcsey; Michael Haney; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in patients treated in the intensive care unit. The spread of pathogens with anti-microbial resistance mandates the investigation of novel therapeutic strategies. We hypothesized that specific polyclonal anti-P. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Respiratory Tract Infections: Aspects of Aetiology, Virulence, and Communicable Disease Control

    Författare :Jonas Ahl; Enheten för infektionssjukdomar; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Streptococcus pneumoniae; day care center; communicable disease control intervention; eradication therapy; invasive pneumococcal disease; serotype 3; aetiology; ventilator-associated pneumonia;

    Sammanfattning : The paediatric nasopharyngeal flora is regarded as the largest reservoir for Streptococcus pneumoniae, and the carrier state is always antecedent to infection and a prerequisite for dispersion of these bacteria. Pneumococci are the predominant aetiology of bacterial respiratory tract infections and a major cause of morbidity and mortality, in the most severe cases due to invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD; mainly sepsis and meningitis). 4. 4. Infections Related to the Use of Medical Devices and Changes in the Oropharyngeal Flora

    Författare :Hulda Thorarinsdottir; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; thrombosis; critical illness; biofilm; intratracheal intubation; ventilator-associated pneumonia; ; central venous catheters; catheter-related infections; proton pump inhibitors; oropharynx; MICROBIOTA; foreign-body reaction; hemolysis; inflammation;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Humans exist in mutualistic balance with a large range of microbiota. Illness and hospitalization can disturb this balance and contribute to hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), which occur most often in critically ill patients. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Hospital-acquired pneumonia in intensive care patients

    Författare :Petra Hyllienmark; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The present thesis describes the incidence and risk factors for pneumonia and especially ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) among Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients. Bacteria in samples from the lower respiratory tract of patients receiving mechanical ventilation are reported, including the duration of treatment prior to the first occurrence of different pathogens.
