11. Angiotensin II and vascular disease. Studies in rats and atherosclerosis-prone mice
Sammanfattning : Angiotensin II (Ang II) is of importance for a number of physiological processes but also plays an important pathophysiological role in cardiovascular disease. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the role of Ang II in hypertension-related atherosclerosis and vascular disease and to investigate possible anti-atherosclerotic effects of the angiotensin II, type 2 (AT2) receptor. 12. Vascular actions of antimicrobial peptides
Sammanfattning : The present thesis focuses on the vascular effects of antimicrobial peptides especially mechanisms involving the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO), which is released from the blood vessel wall during inflammatory conditions such as sepsis. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide stimulates the expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which increases the NO production in vascular tissues or cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). LÄS MER
13. Transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype - Implications for vascular disease states
Sammanfattning : As the world population is pushing toward 8 billion, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading cause of death worldwide, representing 30% of all global deaths. A large body of work has recognized that smooth muscle cells (SMCs) surrounding the blood vessels play a prominent role in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases. LÄS MER
14. Perlecan in vascular disease
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis has become the most common cause of death in the world. The development of the disease involves accumulation of lipids in the inner layer of the vessel wall, the intima, and recruitment of inflammatory cells and smooth muscle cells (SMCs). LÄS MER
15. Thrombolysis in vascular surgery
Sammanfattning : Background and aims: Thrombolysis is in common use in the treatment of acute forms of vascular disease. It may be used both systemically and locally, in the latter case through an endovascular approach, socalled catheter-directed thrombolysis. LÄS MER
