1. Epidemiological, mechanistic and genetic aspects of vascular ageing and arterial stiffness in the population
Sammanfattning : The core feature of vascular ageing is the age-associated stiffening of the large, elastic arteries, or arteriosclerosis. This results in a diminished volume-buffering function and is therefore central for the increase in systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure seen with advancing age. LÄS MER
2. Biomarkers of vascular function and structure in young healthy adults
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is a disease affecting the blood vessels in the body. Its pathophysiologic mechanisms involve infiltration of the vessel walls by fatty matter and immune cells. This process is slow, starting in childhood but typically not manifesting as symptomatic disease until late adulthood (after 60 years of age). LÄS MER
3. Effects of physical exercise on coronary and peripheral vascular function. An integrative physiological study from rat to man
Sammanfattning : Physical exercise is beneficial for the cardiovascular health. Numerous epidemiological studies reveal that physical activity reduces the risk of cardiovascular related death. Nevertheless, the underlying vessel wall specific physiological and molecular mechanisms still remain incompletely understood. LÄS MER
4. Stiffness and aneurysm of the aorta. Relations to vascular aging, hyperglycemia, and inflammation
Sammanfattning : A well-functioning arterial system for the transport of oxygen to the cells is essential for human health. The aorta has a key role for the provision of this physiological effect. Disturbances to aortic function can lead to majorsymptoms and even death due to ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). LÄS MER
5. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects
Sammanfattning : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing.
