Thanks to the high fissile density, high thermal conductivity, and high melting point, uranium nitride and uranium silicide have been considered accident tolerant or high-performance fuels for commercial light water reactors and for future generation reactor systems. The common denominator for the three systems examined in this work is that they contain actinides (elements of atomic numbers between 89 and 103) in either the solid phase or as a sorbate.
